CHICAGO – Advocating for increased investment in mental health resources for Black residents, state Rep. La Shawn K. Ford, D-Chicago, will join PWP Health and other West Side organizations for a press conference scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 4 at 11:30 a.m. at PWP Health’s location at 2930 W. Grand Ave. in Chicago.

  • What: Press Conference on Black Mental Health in Chicago

  • When: Sunday, Feb. 4, 11:30 a.m.

  • Where: PWP Health; 2930 W. Grand Ave., Chicago

  • Who: State Rep. La Shawn K. Ford, PWP Health, Breakthrough, Edna’s Circle, Matthew House, Mercy Housing, Breakthrough Ministries, TBF Diagnostics, Pillars and Lawndale Christian Health Center

“From the influx of drugs to the consequences of violence, so many people in Chicago are understandably hurting, and we need to help them,” Ford said. “As we’ve seen with the senseless murder of multiple students this past week, our youth, in particular, have been exposed to significant trauma.  If we don’t provide the help they need and the resources they deserve, we risk future challenges for them, their families, and our community. Let’s come together to prioritize mental health and help residents heal their pain.”

“Managing an illness is not just about treating the symptoms, but also about embracing self-care, seeking support, and finding the resilience within to live a fulfilling life despite the challenges,” said Kaaron Whiteside, PWP Health Director.

Ford will be joined Sunday by Martin Coffer of Breakthrough Ministries, Stephan Koruba of The Night Ministry, and representatives from PWP Health, Edna’s Circle, and Becoming a Man (BAM)

A recent review by the Chicago Sun-Times of Cook County Medical Examiner data notes that Black residents have seen the most significant increase in rates of death by suicide in Chicago since 2019. Individuals who need assistance and help now are urged to contact the 988 Suicide and Crisis Helpline.
